Bathroom Pendant lights are an extremely important part of what makes a bathroom look so good. With the right Pendant lighting fixtures to match with the tiles, colours, taps and other fittings, you can create a terrific looking room. Additionally, bathrooms are so important to get right. This is not only because they are one of the busiest rooms in the whole house, but because it is one of the rooms that a guest will most likely frequent. For that reason, everything needs to look clean and great. So finding the right Pendant lights to enhance the bathroom is extremely important.
However, a lot of people don't realise that Pendant mounted bathroom lights need to comply with UK safety regulations. These regulations are actually very strict – meaning that there are many interior Pendant lights out there that simply should not be fitted in a bathroom. Each light is given an Ingress Protection rating (or IP rating). The numbers in this rating refer to how much a light is protected from water or steam entering the light's fitting. A water resistance rating of IP44 or above is a requirement for lights to be safely used in a bathroom. The first 4 in an IP44 rating refers to the fixture being protected against solid objects that are over 1mm (such as tools, wires and small wires). The second 4 in IP44 refers to a fitting having protection against water being sprayed on it from all directions. However, a limited amount of water can enter IP44 rated bathroom Pendant lights and still be safe. Then there are also zones to consider. Particular lights are suited to particular zones of a bathroom. For example, Zone 0 refers to a light that is inside the shower cubicle or bath. This must be rated at IPx7 (protection against immersion between 15cm to 1m). Zone 1 refers to directly above the bath tub or shower cubicle at a height of up to 2.25m. Zone 2 is the area directly beside, and all around, Zone 1 – as well as the area outside of 2.25m above the bath and shower. It also refers to the area around the wash basin. In both Zones 1 and 2, a Pendant light rating of IPX4 is required (where 'x' refers to any number in the first number category).
Now that you understand what type of rated bathroom Pendant lights are required for the purposes of safety regulations, now it's time to learn some tips and techniques that make for successful placement of a Pendant light for bathroom. One tip relates to how a bathroom mirror and the lights around it work together. You should ensure mirrors are lit in order to offer a flattering effect. This is known as task lighting, which means creating the best possible lighting for purposes such as shaving, cleaning and putting on make-up. When the face is evenly lit from both sides, this will provide the most flattering look – so it is common to see two Pendant lights for bathrooms flanking a mirror at either side. Another good idea is to think of incorporating Pendant lighting for night-time. While the main light would be used to light up the bathroom during daytime, a softer Pendant light can be used as a night-time light for those who wander to the bathroom in a sleepy state. A bright light in this instance can be too much for tired eyes; a night Pendant light can be soothing. It's possible to find particular light fixtures that would complement such an approach.
